Before I begin, we, Essential Feed would first like to wish everyone a Happy Chinese New Year! And may this horse year be a prosperous one for everybody. Secondly, to enhance your site browsing experience, we are still undergoing a thorough revamp process. Therefore, please bear with us in the meantime and do drop us any feedbacks for improvements. Without further ado, let us begin with today's cinema feed, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was originally a short story by James Thurber in 1939. Renowned for his most popular piece, it was adapted into a movie twice. First in 1947, starring Danny Kaye and the recent version in 2013 by Ben Stiller. I've never read the original story by Thurber but I had watched both adaptations. According to my research, both versions portrayed the story differently from Thurber's plot and each has its own supportive fans defending their preferred version.
Trailer: (Danny Kaye, 1947 Version)
The 1947 classic was more comedy oriented. A simple plot of a daydreamer who often immersed in his own fantasies, accidentally involved with a conspiracy that was resolved at last. It's a classic comedy and Danny Kaye's acting as a comedian was unquestionable. Yet, this version is less appealing to me. In my opinion, this version was too lengthy for a comedy. Mitty's repetitive zoning out behaviour sure allows your imagination to run wild but it gradually got boring and dull. It's the type of gimmick that would be erased from your memory when the movie ends.
I've never liked any of Ben Stiller's films. I guess I'm simply not in tuned with his sense of humour. After Walter Mitty, my stereotype was completely overthrown. Although he is still not a good comedian, but he is certainly a sentimental story teller. In this interpretation, Walter Mitty remained as a light story, yet encompasses a meaningful purpose by mirroring the unpretentious realities to you and me.
The Secret life of Walter Mitty (2013) isn't flawless but it is definitely a MUST WATCH! I would strongly recommend to all of you, especially for those who are seeking a goal in life whilst feeling dreadful with their daily routine.
Stop dreaming, start living, be courageous and make a difference to your life!
