Cinema Feed #14: 12 Years a Slave (2013)

The 86th Academy Awards had just ended last Sunday, filling us with Ellen Degeneres's delightful humour.  With its ongoing fever, our topic of Cinema Feed this week goes to the winner of the best picture this year, 12 Years A Slave.

Trailer:

Directed by British director, Steve Mcqueen and Brad Pitt as one of the co-producer, 12 Years a Slave is an adaptation based on the 1853 memoir of the same title by Solomon Northup. It depicts the shattering journey of Solomon's (Starring Chiwatel Ejiofor), who was initially a freeman, was kidnapped and enslaved for twelve consecutive years in Louisiana before having his freedom retrieved again.

Slavery is one of the most notorious event that human beings frequently practice. From centuries ago till today, the exploitation and maltreatment from people like Edwin Epps (Starring Michael Fassbender) were justified with the hierarchal difference between the rich and the poor. Through the screening of Solomon's despairing journey, 12 Years a Slave served not only as a confrontation of this unsettling period of American history. More importantly, it is educating us to prevent or stop this inhumane act by acknowledging our mistakes.

Apart from its heavy content, the cinematography and the acting in 12 Years a Slave were impeccable. Scenes where Solomon gazed hollowly to the serene nature at the south were depressing and infectious that one can truly express their empathy. On top of that, the portrayal of Lupita Nyong'o's role as Patsey was absolutely mind blowing. Her devastating life had impacted me heavily, in which I've grieved and expressed my anger towards the humiliating treatment that she had experienced.

However, I do find that the character developments were slightly too thorough and do hope that there were more in-depth explorations of it. 12 Years a Slave, is the chronicle of the unpretentious truth of a man struggling to stay alive. I do highly recommend it to you guys!

Lastly, I'll share with you guys the beautiful scores by Hans Zimmer and the interviews on New York Film Festival. See you next Friday!
