Cinema Feed #16: Dallas Buyers Club

Trailer:

Premiered at last year's Toronto International Film Festival, the film received wide critical acclaims since its release. Inspired by true events, it is a biographical adaptation based on an article which appeared in The Dallas Morning News during 1992. It tells the tale of an AIDS patient Ron Woodroof, who smuggled unapproved pharmaceutical drugs in the mid 80s, as they were a means of aid to improve HIV symptoms. He later founded the "Dallas Buyers Club", aiming to distribute the drugs to more AIDS patients. However, the club was opposed by the Food and Drug Adminstration (FDA).

The film itself had raised two interesting issues that had drawn us into contemplating. First, it explored the problems of the unethical conducts from professionals such as doctors, to the corruption between corporates and government authorities. As simple as it is, the temptation of greed often drives us to neglect our consciousness. As a result, innocent people are always the ones who suffer the most.

Secondly, the discrimination faced by the social minorities happens on a daily basis as the majority are often blinded by our ego and inferiority to respect and understand the differences between individuals. Through Rayon (Starring Jared Leto), the fictional character created by it's screenwriter, Craig Borten. Dallas Buyers Club depicts an interesting transformation of a chauvinist and homophobe-like Woodroof. His initial purpose was only to earn money from this minority group to which he had dismissed to gradual understanding, accepting, and lastly, become someone whom the group respects.

The birth of Dallas Buyers Club took lengthy preparations and numerous cast switchings till it was finalised by director Jean Marc Vallée and Matthew McConoughey. To play the role of AIDS patients, both Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto lost 47 pounds (21kg) and over 30 pounds (14kg) respectively. The consequences of that outcome lead to extraordinary performances from the both, which made headway for them to win the titles of "Best Actor" & Best Supporting Actor" for this year's Academy Awards. With his Texas upbringing, McConaughey fits perfectly as the character of Woodroof. In his portrayal, Woodroof became an arrogant and outrageous cowboy. An anti-hero whom we disliked at the beginning, but underwent a metamorphosis to become a determined and kind-hearted person whom we respect in the end. That subtle development of Woodroof as the plot flows is simply amazing. McConaughey has proven to us that he is no longer the six-pack macho male lead who appeared in romance flicks anymore.

On the other hand, Jared Leto as the transgender woman, Rayon is equally remarkable. Her poignant life is a representation of the homosexual minority in that era whom you will sympathise and reflect with, as they encounter all sorts of bullying and social dejection. In spite of being a straight man, Leto's acting comes so naturally that he has empowered Rayon with the dignity and strong will to survive in her own ways that the character became so beautiful but absolutely heartbreaking.

As usual, sharing with this country soundtrack playlists of Dallas Buyers Club, have an amazing weekend!
