Cinema Feed #17: American Hustle (2013)

Trailer:

Director David O.Russell and his stellar casts from the renowned productions of The Fighter (2010) and Silver Linings Playbook (2012) have reunited for his latest highlight, American Hustle. Inspired loosely by ABSCAM - A FBI operation during late 1970s to early 1980s. The upbeat tempo story directs us to immediately focus on con artists, Irvine Rosenfeld (starring Christian Bale) and Sydney Prosser (starring Amy Adams), who were forced to cooperate with FBI agent Richie Dimaso (starring Bradley Cooper). The sting operation soon escalated to the involvement of corrupt politicians and the mafia thats beyond Irvine's control.

The narration flows smoothly during the first hour development in setting up the structure and establishing the ties between the characters, but soon became a mess and hustled through the second half. Though Russell did state his aim of focusing on the characters' development instead of the story itself. I was not taken by surprise in that aspect and only found the partnership between Irvine and Sydney resembling an alternative form of Bonnie and Clyde.

Surely I was mesmerised with Amy Adam's seductive neckline and her elegant disguise as the British aristocrat, Edith Greensly. Still, the lack of in depth substance in American Hustle failed to impress me to have further comments with the exception of the retro soundtrack that is worth listening. The attraction of the star-studded cast certainly aided the film in achieving high commercial success, but I do wonder the reasons of its widely received critical acclaims and academy nominations.

Do you have a different perspective of the film? Share it with us, we would like to know why it draws your attention. Lastly, have a wonderful weekend by traveling back to the 70s with this jazzy rock and roll soundtrack. See you again next Friday!
