Trailer:
Known as Antony Chen's debut feature, ILO ILO (2013) has been widely receiving critical reviews since its release. It is a story that was derived from his and many other Singaporeans' childhood memories of growing up with a maid. A common practice in Southeast Asia where a foreign helper is employed to look after the kids and take care of the household chores, while the owners could concentrate on their hectic work schedules.
Setting its time frame during the period of the financial crisis in 1997, ILO ILO (2013) introduces the lifestyle of a middle class family in Singapore to the audience. While examining the troubles that the protagonists were facing, I felt a sense of breathlessness as I could empathise with their increasing pressures which were on the verge of breaking. None of these problems were resolved until the end of the film, yet my emotions were tied deeply to the protagonists in their most genuine form. In his realistic portrayal, Antony Chen had presented a mirror for us to review our ordinary life.
