A 11-member ensemble from Portland, Oregon released their mind-grabbing album back in August last year. 'White Lighter' is an all-rounded package that deserves some attention as it will certainly leave listeners in awe.
Led by frontman Kyle Morton, the album depicts a story: a story that is based on Morton's personal experiences particularly relating to his childhood struggle with Lyme disease. With this in mind, Morton tells his story wholeheartedly through his powerful vocals, and by joining forces with his bandmates, they create a piece that is distinct with their own signature.
Initially, I was impressed by how orchestra oriented the sound is; the band packs in a variety of string and wind instruments, and recurring backing vocals which allows them to produce different sounds that could only be possible with the number of members they have. The outcome is overwhelming, as the instrumentals accentuate the morbid themes put forth in Morton's lyrics. Ultimately, these themes are something that listeners should be able to relate to.
Although the lyrics may induce unpleasant feelings as you proceed through the album, the supporting voices that reappear constantly acts as a contradiction to balance out the gloomy mood.
If you do have the time to spare, then do give this album a try. It will surely not disappoint you.
