Electro ambient splattered with post-rock structure–if any of these genres appeal to you then you'd definitely not want to miss this out! This latest sunny ambient production is San Francisco's Scott Hansen's (or Tycho's) fourth studio album to date. Up till now, Tycho's music has always been mild and uplifting, nothing too strenuous which would be a difficult task to digest. In spite of the abundance of material in his discography, Awake doesn't appear to deviate too far from his roots.
Continuing on with his warm, sunny theme, Tycho has deployed a range of instruments to construct an imaginary sight of the eight-piece ongoing landscape. From his signature melodic synths to his rich, layered guitar arrangements, each choice of instrument helps to paint the vibrant picture of a hazy summer day. Upon further listen, the transitions between tracks are well played as they take place so smoothly. Partially, this is also thanks to how melodically driven this album is. On one hand, such minimal variations make this 40-minute record a joy to the ears as it won't become an exhausting session in the long run. However, this minimalistic approach also deals a damaging blow to the album as the similarities between the instrumentation employed for each track inhibits the opportunities for each individual track to set themselves apart.
