Music Feed #32: "The Gentle EP" by Little Comets

Little Comets have travelled far since beginning their music career five years ago. Having released four EPs and two albums, they're now laying the foundations for their third album. But before that, lets take a look at their latest material; The Gentle EP.

Their newest release reflects on the band's growth as they proceed to mature as musicians. While they continue to employ catchy, repetitive melodies (at least for the first track Little Italy), they abandon this technique immediately as the succeeding tracks exhibit a rarity to their usual sound. By far, Little Italy is the most uplifting track in the EP which greatly echoes their previous material. Following the transition from Little Italy to The Blur, the Line and the Thickest of Onions, one perceivable fact from the drastic change in style echoes the band's desire to undergo maturation.

The juxtaposition of sounds is clearly evident if you listen to Little Italy and immediately jump into another track. Starting with The Blur, the Line and the Thickest of Onions, it seems this is where we truly enter their territory. The fitting track title is an appropriate image to relate to the trio's current situation. Comparable to an onion, the band so far have only unveiled their thickest layer. With this EP, we begin to dig deeper as they slowly unravel the endless layers that they've been withholding.

From the lonesome piano, to the isolated vocals in the aforementioned track, or the mainly acoustic driven Coalition of One. Little Comets dwell further to illustrate that they can deal with other topics besides the usual love and despair. By introducing a wider selection of topics on social decline and dissatisfaction, the EP is a major step-up from their previous works. Not only does it show their maturation in songwriting, the band also grows with the sound they have to offer.
