Music Feed #35: "With Light and With Love" by Woods
Woods–the folk rock group from Brooklyn has always been consistent at making albums while taking short breaks in between each. Active since 2005, the band is lead by Jeremy Earl who is the also behind the record label Woodsist, that produces all of the band's material. Having travelled long distances, the band has undergone several transformations over their journey. The same can be applied to their latest release.
The latest record, With Light and With Love marks the group's seventh studio album release. Picking up from where the acoustic rock style left off in Bend Beyond (2012), the current album starts off with some simple, laid-back folk rock with Shepherd. The same feelings are present in the upcoming track, which when played consecutively, evoke the music style of the sixties/seventies.
Once you reach the third track With Light and With Love, you'll be presented with a nine-minute guitar bombardment. Fortunately, the band didn't get too carried away with their guitar work, and they included a decent lyrical beginning and end to balance things out.
Perhaps one of the factors that has hindered my liking for every song in a Woods' album is Earl's tendency to sheer off from his vocal range. His love for putting his nodules in danger is unbearable at times. It's good to see that he's toned down in this album by keeping within his register. The only exception being Moving To The Left. Though when placed beside the well-received Rain On, it is comparable to a normal functioning cell in your body.
The album in general would make a fine candidate for anyone who happens to go on a road trip. However, this does not mean that you shouldn't listen to it on other occasions. In fact, the overall clear, crisp euphony would serve well for any other purposes–even if you're mindlessly staring at the ceiling. If you're a cheery folk rock person, then the latest addition to Woods' discography should deserve a place in your music collection.
